LANTANA Space Artist residency Program 26/27 | Meet the artists

LANTANA Space is pleased to announce Camille Therese, Darren Blackman and Jack Hodges as the selected artists for our Artist Residency Program 26/27.

Selected from 59 applications, their proposals bring distinct approaches to material experimentation, cultural inquiry and community engagement. We thank all applicants for sharing their work and ideas with us.

The residency program provides dedicated studio space and time for research, experimentation and creative development, with no prescribed outcome.

Follow the artists’ residencies as they develop, with open studios and opportunities to connect with their work and processes to be announced.

Camille Therese

12 October – 7 December 2026

Sunshine Coast artist Camille Therese works across sculpture, painting and installation, exploring memory, agency and the forces that shape our choices. She approaches materials as collaborators, interested in how they resist, transform and retain traces of what has happened to them.

During her residency, Camille plans to turn the studio into a material research lab. Working with fabric, plant and worksite waste, she will experiment with bioplastics, mycelium, sculpting compounds, latex and silicone, testing how these materials behave under different conditions.

Her experiments will sit alongside questions about free will: how much of what we choose is shaped by biology, inherited experience, technology and systems of control? She also plans to create a free zine of recipes and techniques so others can try the processes she develops.

Darren Blackman

28 October 2026 – June 2027

Darren Blackman is a proud Gurang/Gangulu man with Kanak South Sea Island heritage from Vanuatu. Based in Nambour, he works across printmaking, installation, text-based neon and digital projection. Drawing on oral histories from his Elders and his lived experience, Darren challenges colonial narratives through language and light.

At LANTANA, Darren will develop his most ambitious solo project yet, an exhibition for NorthSite Contemporary Arts during Cairns Indigenous Art Fair 2027. His research centres on “decolonising consciousness”, using the visual language of high-fashion merchandising and commercial signage to confront colonial power and assert unceded sovereignty.

He will experiment with screen printing, textiles, upcycled garments, sculptural forms, projection and sound. Sharing work in progress with local First Nations artists, family and the wider community will be part of his process.

Jack Hodges

13 February – 11 March 2027

Jack Hodges is a multidisciplinary artist based on Gumbaynggirr Country in Nambucca Heads, NSW. Working across painting, sculpture, video, installation and public engagement, he uses humour, curiosity and everyday encounters to explore how personal beliefs become shared realities.

During his residency, Jack plans to begin with conversations, local stories and observations of the Sunshine Coast. Using cardboard, paper clay, paint and found materials, he will experiment with dioramas and sculptural environments that could incorporate storytelling and video.

His research asks how art might create room for people with different beliefs to understand one another, and what happens when we allow contradictions to remain unresolved. Expect a mix of philosophical inquiry, DIY construction and absurdity.

The LANTANA Space Artist residency 26/27 is jointly supported by Sunshine Coast Council’s Arts and Heritage Levy and the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) in partnership with the Queensland Government.
