LANTANA Space Artist Residency Program 26/27 | Meet the artists

LANTANA Space is pleased to announce Camille Therese Evans, Darren Blackman and Jack Hodges as the selected artists for our Artist Residency Program 26/27.

Selected from 59 applications, their proposals bring distinct approaches to material experimentation, cultural inquiry and community engagement. We thank all applicants for sharing their work and ideas with us.

The residency program provides dedicated studio space and time for research, experimentation and creative development, with no prescribed outcome.

Follow the artists’ residencies as they develop, with open studios and opportunities to connect with their work and processes to be announced.

12 October – 7 December 2026

Sunshine Coast artist Camille Therese Evans works across sculpture, painting and installation, exploring memory, agency and the forces that shape our choices. Her practice considers materials as collaborators, examining how they resist, transform and retain traces of their histories.

During her residency, Camille will transform the studio into a space for material research and experimentation. Working with fabric, plant and construction waste, she will test bioplastics, mycelium, sculpting compounds, latex and silicone, observing how materials respond to different processes and conditions.

Through these experiments, Camille will consider questions of free will and the extent to which our choices are shaped by biology, inherited experience, technology and systems of control. She also plans to produce a freely available zine documenting her processes, recipes and techniques for others to explore.

28 October 2026 – 30 June 2027

Darren Blackman is a Gurang/Gangulu artist with Kanak South Sea Island heritage from Vanuatu. Based in Nambour, his practice spans printmaking, installation, text, neon and digital projection. Drawing on oral histories shared by his Elders and his lived experience, Darren uses language and light to challenge colonial narratives.

During his residency, Darren will develop work towards a major solo exhibition at NorthSite Contemporary Arts, presented during Cairns Indigenous Art Fair 2027. Centred on the idea of decolonising consciousness, his research draws on the visual language of high-fashion merchandising and commercial signage to examine colonial power and assert unceded sovereignty.

Working across screen printing, textiles, upcycled garments, sculpture, projection and sound, Darren will test new materials and forms. Conversations and exchanges with local First Nations artists, family and community will inform the development of the work.

Portrait of multidisciplinary artist Jack Hodges, based in Nambucca Heads, New South Wales, selected for the LANTANA Space Artist Residency Program 2026/27.

1 May to 27 June 2027

Jack Hodges is a multidisciplinary artist based on Gumbaynggirr Country in Nambucca Heads, NSW. Working across painting, sculpture, video, installation and public engagement, he uses humour, curiosity and everyday encounters to explore how personal beliefs become shared realities.

During his residency, Jack plans to begin with conversations, local stories and observations of the Sunshine Coast. Using cardboard, paper clay, paint and found materials, he will experiment with dioramas and sculptural environments that could incorporate storytelling and video.

His research asks how art might create room for people with different beliefs to understand one another, and how we live with contradictions without needing to resolve them. Expect a mix of philosophical inquiry, DIY construction and absurdity.
